The island of Cyprus is located in the Eastern Mediterranean. Cyprus
is the third largest island in the Mediterranean with only Sicily and
Sardinia being larger. Its nearest neighbours are Turkey to the North
(40 miles), Syria to the East (60 miles), Lebanon to the South East
(108 miles) and Egypt to the south (230 miles).
North Cyprus is about 100 miles long, 40 miles across at its widest
point. The geography of North Cyprus is a blend of mountains, plains
and beaches. The Kyrenia range with its jagged lime stone peaks
reaches its zenith at Mount Selvili at 3357 feet, the range runs along
most of the north coastline to form a magnificent backdrop. The
mountain range losses height as it extends east towards the narrow
peninsula known as Karpas or `The Panhandle`. This area boasts the
best beaches in Cyprus. Miles of empty bays with pure white sand,
where the loggerhead and green turtle still come ashore to lay their
eggs in North Cyprus’s unspoilt beaches. The Karpas peninula is a rich
botanical area with hundreds of species of wild flowers.
